Taking a taxi to Zaventem airport for an early morning flight

What time should you arrive at Zaventem airport in Brussels?

Brussels Airport recommends arriving 2 hours before departure for an international (non-Schengen) flight and 1 hour 30 for a European (Schengen) flight. In practice, these times depend on your situation:

If your flight takes off at 6.30am and you are on a Schengen flight with online check-in, aim to be at the airport by 5am. Then add your travel time from home (allow 25 to 40 minutes from the centre of Brussels by taxi, depending on the district).

Holidays, Christmas, summer: when the airport is packed, leave even earlier

Getting through security does not take the same time on a Tuesday in February as on a Saturday at the start of the holidays. Brussels Airport has clearly identified peak periods when queues can grow considerably, especially between 5am and 7am when low-cost flights take off one after the other:

• Christmas and New Year (20 Dec. to 2 Jan.): this is the busiest period of the year. Security queues can exceed 30 minutes at morning peak times. Allow an extra 30 to 45 minutes.
• School holidays (Carnival, Easter, All Saints): families travel in large numbers on the first and last days of the holidays. The airport runs at full capacity from 5am.
• Summer (July and August): Saturday departures are particularly busy. Brussels Airport regularly records more than 90,000 passengers a day in high season.
• Bank holidays and long weekends (1 May, Ascension, 21 July): the same concentration on morning flights.

During these periods, security is not the only thing that slows down. Bag drop desks are slower too, toilet queues are longer, and boarding gates are further away (early morning flights are often assigned to the most distant gates in Pier A or B). Leaving home 30 minutes earlier can make all the difference.

The other ways to get to the airport (and their limits before dawn)

A taxi is not the only option for reaching Brussels Airport. But before 6am, the alternatives quickly show their limits.

The train (Brussels Airport Express)

The Brussels Airport Express connects Brussels-Central to the airport in 17 minutes, with departures every 15 to 20 minutes. It is fast and cheap (around 12.40 euros). The problem: the first train leaves Brussels-Central at around 5am. If your flight takes off at 6.30am and you need to be at the airport by 5am, the train is simply not an option. And you still have to live near the station: add the journey from your home to Brussels-Central, which can take 15 to 30 minutes on public transport or on foot.

The bus (STIB / De Lijn)

STIB line 12 connects the airport to the city centre, but frequency drops drastically before 6am. De Lijn also runs services, but they are neither direct nor designed for early morning flights. In short: no reliable bus link to Zaventem before 5.30am, and an unpredictable journey time.

Your own car
